Masala Khakhra: A famous Gujarati's Breakfast Snack



One of Popular Breakfast Recipe originating from Indian state of Gujarat is Khakhra, made with wheat flour, Gram Flour, Chilli Powder, salt and Oil. It is a healthy snack that is best enjoyed with chutneys or any vegetable curries. And this Khakhra is also popular throughout world, but still believed that a true Guajarati’s home is incomplete without Khakhras.

Ingredients for Masala Khakhra


1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
1 Tbsp Gram Flour
½ Tbsp Cumin Seeds
½ Tbsp Chilli Powder
Pinch of Turmeric Powder & Asafoetida
Salt to Taste
1 Tbsp Oil
4 Tbsp Ghee for Cooking

How it’s made


To make the Masala Khakhras, combine the Ingredients in a deep bowl and knead into soft dough using enough water. Cover it with a lid and keep aside.

Divide the dough into 4 equal portions.

Roll a portion of the dough into a circle using a little whole wheat flour for rolling.

Heat a tava and place a roti on it and cook on both sides for a few seconds.

Apply ghee on each side and cook on a slow flame until crisp using little pressure with help of a muslin cloth or with a khakhra press.

Allow the Khakhras to cool completely and store in an air-tight container.
